The EPSG Geodetic Parameter Dataset ( www.epsg.org ) was first published in 1994 and has since become the global de-facto standard repository for geodetic parameters. These parameters are needed for the geodetic referencing of spatial data. They include definitions of Coordinate Reference Systems and coordinated transformations.

Local Data
Now this is a scary one: Copy shared data from the server to your C-drive. These words will make the data-manager turn red but it might also make your day easier. For instance, if you are going to do complex and processing heavy analysis it might be a good idea to just copy all the data to your C-drive. Your analysis will often run MUCH quicker. When finished, just copy the result back onto the server.
Simplify Symbology and layer settings
If a layer uses advanced symbology, labeling, queries and even joins, it will take much longer to redraw. A good tip is that if you are just going to work on the GIS-data, and you dont need to see the visualisation, just enable \"Single Symbol\" symbology. It will redraw faster.
"Draft Mode" in Layout-view
This nice little button on the layout-toolbar turns of data-drawing but keeps all the graphical layout elements.
Open A New Map Document
ArcMap is a slow starter. Depending on how many plugins and various other settings, ArcMap can take a relatively long time to load.
If you already have started ArcMap, it is quicker to load a new map using the File-menu instead of closing ArcMap and loading it again.
Mixing Coordinate Systems
Forcing ArcMap to do on the fly reprojecting of your data will make the redrawing slower. If you are going to work on just one layer for a while, it might be a good idea to drag it into an empty ArcMap session, so that the dataframe coordinate system is the same as the layer. This will increase performance.

What can we do to make our lifes easier when working with this beast? I meet many customers that are frustrated with the bad performance of ArcGIS.

Below are some ArcMap tips:
Map Cache
Now this is a nice toolbar in ArcMap. It enables you to cache SDE features in the PC\'s memory making the redrawing go much faster.
Turn off drawing
This is a button you can use to turn off ArcMap's drawing of the dataframe. If you are going to add or remove layers and you dont need to see the screen refreshing, just hit the button, and the operations will go much quicker.
The button can be found by : Tools->customize->Commands->Pan/Zoom. Just drag the button onto an existing toolbar.
Hitting Escape
A classic. Hitting the Escape button really hard and repeatedly just might stop ArcMap from using half a minute to refresh the screen.
Raster Display Quality
High quality rasters and grids might take a long time to redraw. If this is irritating you and you dont need high quality, just go to the layer\'s propeties->Display and turn down the display quality tab. Redrawing will now go much quicker.
Working with less layers
This is so obvious that we often forget Smile If you are going to do much work on just one layer, there is no need to have 5 other layers displayed. Just turn them off.
